The authors consider variational problems derived from shape optimization and elasto-plasticity, as well as optimal transport without the membrane. Specific problems are tackled in depth: the optimal reinforcement of a membrane, reduction of traffic congestion and elastic-plastic torsion. In the derived free boundary problem, the existence of an optimal reinforcement is proved along with some higher integrability properties, while the defined energy is maximized. Some numerical results are obtained.
