The authors consider classes of Hilbert spaces of entire functions including previously known classes such as \(E^2_\gamma\) and \(F_\alpha^2\), where \(E^2_\gamma\) consists of the functions \(f(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_nz^n\) with the norm \[ \|f\|_\gamma=\Big(\sum_{n=0}^\infty \gamma_n^{-2}| a_n| ^2\big)^{1/2}<\infty, \] for a given sequence \(\gamma=(\gamma_n)\) of positive real numbers with \(\gamma_{n+1}/\gamma_n\) decreasing to zero, and \(F_\alpha^2\) consists of the entire functions such that \[ \|f\|_\alpha=\Big(\frac{\alpha}{\pi}\int_{\mathbb C} | f(z)| ^2 e^{-\alpha| z| ^2}dA(z)\Big)^{1/2}<\infty. \] The study of composition operators \(C_\phi\) on \(E^2_\gamma\), under the assumption that \(n\gamma_n/\gamma_{n-1}\) is decreasing to \(\tau\) for some \(\tau>0\), was initiated by \textit{G. A. Chacón} et al. [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 135, No. 7, 2205--2218 (2007; Zbl 1116.47021)]. Also composition operators have been studied in the class of Fock spaces \(F_\alpha^2\) by \textit{B. J. Carswell} et al. [Acta Sci. Math. 69, No. 3--4, 871--887 (2003; Zbl 1051.47023)]. The paper analyzes similar results for a wider class of functions. Associated to a sequence \((\beta_n)\) of positive real numbers the authors introduce the sequence \(\mu_\beta(n)=n\beta_{n-1}/\beta_n\) and the values \(\beta_*=\liminf (\beta_n)^{1/n}\), \(\beta^*=\limsup (\beta_n)^{1/n}\) and \(\beta_\rho=\liminf \frac{\log \beta_n}{n\log n}\). In the case \(\beta_*=+\infty\), they consider the space \(\mathcal H(\beta_E)\) of entire functions with \[ \|f\|=\Big(\sum_{n=0}^\infty \beta_n^2| a_n| ^2\Big)^{1/2}<\infty, \] and several subspaces defined according to several conditions on \((\beta_n)\), for instance \(\mathcal H(\beta_\rho)\) and \(\mathcal H(\beta^+_\rho)\) for the cases \(\beta_\rho>0\) and \(0<\beta_\rho<\infty\), respectively. It is shown that the existence of a function in \(\mathcal H(\beta_E)\) with nonzero order is equivalent to \(\beta_\rho<\infty\), and the fact that any function in \(\mathcal H(\beta_E)\) has finite order corresponds to \(\beta_\rho>0\). The authors analyze some operators acting on \(\mathcal H(\beta_E)\) and some of its subclasses. For instance they show, among other things, that the derivation operator \(D\) is bounded (resp. compact) on \(\mathcal H(\beta_E)\) if and only if \(\mu_\beta\) is bounded (resp. \(\lim \mu_\beta(n)=0\)), and that the composition operator \(C_\phi\) is bounded (resp. compact) on \(\mathcal H(\beta^+_\rho)\) if and only if \(\phi(z)=az+b\) with \(| a| \leq 1\) (resp. \(| a| <1\)).
