      Let \(I\) be an ideal of a regular ring \(R\). \textit{G. Lyubeznik} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 491, 65--130 (1997; Zbl 0904.13003)] conjectured that each local cohomology module \(H_I^i(R)\) has finitely many associated prime ideals. It is known that this conjecture holds true if either \(R\) has prime characteristic or it is local of characteristic zero.NEWLINENEWLINEThis paper studies Lyubeznik's conjecture. As the main result, the author proves that if \(R\) is an excellent regular ring containing a field of characteristic zero and \(d:=\dim R<\infty\), then \(\mathrm{Ass}_R(H_I^{d-1}(R))\) is finite. Also for any nonnegative integer \(d\), he establishes the equivalence of the following statements: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] Lyubeznik's conjecture holds true for every excellent regular ring containing a field of characteristic zero with \(\dim R\leq d\). \item [(ii)] For every excellent regular domain \(R\) containing an uncountable field of characteristic zero with \(\dim R\leq d\), \(\mathrm{Ass}_R(H_J^{g+1}(R))\) is finite for all ideals \(J\) of height \(g\).NEWLINENEWLINE\end{itemize}}
