Let \(\mathbb{F}_q\) denote the finite field with \(q\) elements. The symmetric group \(S_n\) acts on the set \({\mathcal G}_{n,q}\) of all linear subspaces of \(\mathbb{F}^n_q\) by permuting coordinates. It is shown that the normalized character of the associated permutation representation of \(S_n\) approaches the trivial character as \(n\) approaches infinity. Also the case where the wreath product of \(\mathbb{F}^\times_q\) and \(S_n\) acts on \({\mathcal G}_{n,q}\) is considered, and a conjecture is formulated yielding the asymptotic number of equivalence classes of \(q\)-ary linear codes. Wild's} paper [Finite Fields Appl. 6, 192--202 (2000; Zbl 1006.94030)] is incorrect and so creates a problem in the proof of Wild's (25). The author repairs the inaccuracies here.
