A Banach space \(X\) is said to possess the alternative Daugavet property (ADP in short) if for every rank-one operator \(T:X \to X\) there is a scalar \(\omega\) of unit modulus such that \(\| \text{Id} + \omega T\| = 1 + \| T\| \). Equivalently, \(X\) possesses the ADP iff the numerical radius of every rank-one operator \(T:X \to X\) equals \(\| T\| \). Geometric properties of the ADP spaces and operations with such spaces are studied. A large part of the paper is devoted to the study of the ADP in \(C^*\)-algebras and, more generally, in \(JB^*\)-triples. It is proved that a \(C^*\)-algebra has the ADP iff all of its atomic projections are central and that the ADP of a von Neumann algebra is equivalent to the ADP of its predual.
