To an M/G/1 queue it is associated a sequence of i.i.d. times which prescribe the time until breakdown after a repair if the system is not repaired before. Preventive maintenance is possible at time \(T\), if the system is functioning at that time and idle. Otherwise the system works until breakdown. At breakdown all customers are lost. During repair arriving customers are lost. Repair times are deterministic and longer for a non planned repair. The cost function is the asymptotic time average of lost customers. Using renewal arguments the authors determine conditions under which some \(T\) exists such that preventive maintenance is favourable.
