    Let T be an invertible nonsingular transformation of a \(\sigma\)-finite measure space (X,B,\(\mu\)) and \(w_ n=d\mu T^ n/d\mu\). Maharam introduced the map \((x,y)\to T^*(x,y)=(Tx,y/w(x))\) in \(X\times {\mathbb{R}}^+\). The author uses this map to derive some new ergodic ratio theorems. For example, he shows for conservative T, \(\alpha >1\), \(0<\beta <1\), and almost all \(c>0\), that the following ratios converge a.e.: \[ \sum^{n}_{i=0}f(T^ ix)w_ i^{\alpha}(x)I(w_ i<c)(x)/\sum^{n}_{i=0}g(T^ ix)w_ i^{\alpha}(x)I(w_ i<c)(x), \] where I is the indicator function. In another theorem the analogous ratios are studied for \(\alpha =1\) when \(I(w_ i<c)\) is replaced by \(I(w_ i\in C_ m)\) with \(C_ m=[y_ o/m,y_ om].\) If \(n\to \infty\), and then \(m\to \infty\), the limit exists for type \(III_ 1\)- transformations.
