A computational approach for ordinary differential equation of fourth order with a singular perturbation and simple boundary conditions is presented. The authors discuss a maximum principle, stability issues, and asymptotic expansions of the solutions. Based on these analytical results, three numerical methods are discussed and compared: a fitted operator method, a fitted mesh method, and a boundary value technique. The latter is especially useful if one is interested in accurate results in the boundary layers.
