The authors investigate the title problem by examining the dynamics of a single degree-of-freedom oscillator (mass-spring system) with the mass sliding on a rough surface whose motion is prescribed (that is, a spring-restrained mass on a moving belt). The model of the physical system leads to a system of three first-order autonomous ordinary differential equations. The solution of these equations is found to be very sensitive to the parameters modelling the friction between the mass and the moving support surface. Chaos occurs. Unlike the Lorenz equation system, the stimulating parameters here have physical/experimentally measurable characteristics. The paper provides a lucid exposition on this rather complex phenomena. It presents an analysis leading to new insight into friction-induced vibration. Numerous graphical results and comparisons are given. The paper should be of interest and use to both theoreticians and practitioners working with nonlinear vibrations.
