The paper (talk at the International Conference ``Differential Equations and Topology'' held in Moscow in 2008) is devoted to the life and work of L.S. Pontryagin (1908--1988). His scientific life was devoted to two fields: topology and differential equations and related problems (such as singular perturbation theory, stability of equilibrium states of relay systems, mathematical theory of optimal processes and differential games). Pontryagin's contributions and achievements in both of them are presented in the paper.
