Let \(G\) be a locally compact abelian group and \(\mu\) be a complex valued regular Borel measure on \(G\). If \(K \subset G\) is a compact neighbourhood, the space \(J^p_K(G)\), \(1\leq p < \infty \), consists of all \(f\in L^1_{\text{loc}}(G)\) such that \(\|f\|_K= \sup_{x\in K}(\int_K |f(x-y)|^p \,dm(y))^{1/p} < \infty \). It is shown that, if \(K,K' \subset G\) are compact neighbourhoods, then \(\|\cdot\|_K\) and \(\|\cdot\| _{K'}\) are equivalent norms; hence \(J^p(G)\) may denote the space \(J^p_K(G)\) for some \(K\). If \(1\leq p < \infty \), then \(J^p(G)\) is a Banach space and, if \(G\) is not compact, then \(J^p(G)\) is nonseparable. Using Laplace transform methods, it is shown that the norm of a convolution operator with symbol \(\mu\) on \(J^p(G)\) is bounded below by the \(L^\infty\) norm of the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of \(\mu\). In the main theorem of the paper, it is shown that, for any Banach lattice of locally integrable functions on \(G\) with a shift-invariant norm, the norm of a convolution operator with symbol \(\mu\) is bounded above by the total variation of \(\mu\).
