Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be complex square matrices of the same dimension, and let \(\|.\|_p\) be the Schatten \(p\)-norm. The authors determine the sharpest constant~\(C_{p,q,r}\) such that \[ \|XY-YX\|_p\leq C_{p,q,r}\|X\|_q\|Y\|_r. \] Their main tool is complex interpolation theory. In particular, they prove that \[ C_{p,p,r}=\max\{2^\frac{1}{p},2^{1-\frac{1}{p}}, 2^{1-\frac{1}{r}}\}, \] conjectured earlier (but not in[\textit{K.~Audenaert}, Linear Algebra Appl.~432, 1126--1143 (2010; Zbl 1194.60020)] as said in the paper). This conjecture has already been proved in certain special cases by \textit{A.~Böttcher} and the first author [Linear Algebra Appl.~429, 1864--1885 (2008; Zbl 1173.15010)], the first author [pp.~579--600 in J.~A.~Ball et al. (eds.), Topics in Operator Theory, Vol.~1, Oper. Theory: Adv. Appl.~202, Birkhäuser (2010; Zbl 1193.15020)], and the second author [Linear Algebra Appl.~432, 1126--1143 (2010; Zbl 1194.60020)].
