This paper first studies several properties of lattices of thick subcategories, including distributivity, and the properties implied by distributivity, such as spatiality, and modularity. It is then shown that many of the important examples do not give rise to distributive lattices. Distributivity of a lattice of thick subcategories of triangulated categories is the minimum requirement for it to be the lattice of opens of some topological space. In other words, a lot of important examples do not give rise to a nice lattice. A remedy to the absence of distributivity is to assign a sober space to any essentially small triangulated category. The paper then gives two constructions of the sober spaces: Theorem. There is a functor \(\mathrm{fSpcnt} \colon \mathrm{tcat}^\mathrm{op} \to \mathrm{Sob}\), and an associated notion of support, such that for each essentially small small triangulated category \(K\), the pair \((\mathrm{fSpcnt} K, \mathrm{supp})\) is the terminal support theory. Theorem. There is a sober space \(\mathrm{Spcnt} K\) such that if \(\mathrm{Thick}(K)\) is distributive, then the lattice of opens of \(\mathrm{Spcnt} K\) is isomorphic to \(\mathrm{Thick}(K)\). The first construction is universal and functorial, and it gives some measure of the lattice of thick subcategories. However, this construction does not guarantee the rescontruction of the Balmer spectrum. The second construction, though is partially functorial, addresses the aforementioned issue.
