Partial zeta functions are zeta functions defined by partial Euler products. In the case of the Riemann zeta function, they have been studied by \textit{N.\ Kurokawa} [Acta Arith. 48, 49--52 (1987; Zbl 0616.10034)]. The present author is concerned with partial zeta functions in a more general setting. His starting point is an Euler product \(\zeta_P(s) = \prod_{p\in P}(1-N(p)^{-s})^{-1}\,\) \((\text{Re}\,s>1)\), where \(P\) is an infinite countable set and \(N\) a map \(P\rightarrow {\mathbb R}_{>1}\) such that certain natural conditions known from the theory of ordinary zeta functions are satisfied. For a cyclic group \(G\) of prime order \(q\) and for a map \(\varphi: P\rightarrow G\) he defines the partial zeta function as \[ \zeta_{P_q}(s) = \prod_{p\in P_q}(1-N(p)^{-s})^{-1} \qquad(\text{Re}\,s>1), \] where \(P_q = \{p\in P \mid \varphi(p)\neq 1\}\). For this function he finds a functional equation showing that \(\zeta_{P_q}(s)\) can be analytically continued to Re\(\,s>0\). Under certain conditions on the distribution of the nontrivial zeros, \(\zeta_{P_q}(s)\) has a natural boundary on \(\text{Re}\,s=0\). As applications the author discusses the zeta functions of Dedekind, Selberg, and Ihara. He shows that the partial zeta functions have a natural boundary on Re\(\,s=0\) in the case of the Dedekind zeta functions for abelian fields, the Selberg zeta functions for congruence subgroups of \(\text{SL}_2({\mathbb Z})\), and the Ihara zeta functions for finite regular graphs.
