In [\textit{M. Doi}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 61, No. 3, 853--884 (2009; Zbl 1178.32013)], the first author gave a new construction of compact complex surfaces by gluing together two or more compact complex surfaces with an anticanonical divisor, under suitable conditions. Complex tori, Kodaira and K3 surfaces are obtained in this way. As additional application, Doi proved that if \(X\) is a \(d\)-semistable simple normal crossing (SNC) complex surface with trivial canonical bundle and at most double curves, then there exists a smoothing of \(X\). As SNC surfaces admit at most triple intersections, only this case is left to study. This gap is closed in the paper under review. More precisely, the authors prove that if \(X\) is a \(d\)-semistable SNC complex surface with trivial canonical bundle, then there exists a smoothing of \(X\). The proof broadly relies on the same technique already used in the first paper. The trade-off for the greater generality is that the smoothing map, holomorphic when the intersections are at most double, is only smooth in the generic case.
