Following Poincaré, real submanifolds of \(\mathbb C^2\) (and, more generally, of \(\mathbb C^n\)) have been studied as ``deformations'' of ``model submanifolds'' with quadratic (and, more generally, polynomial) defining equations. The geometry of the submanifolds depends strongly on the geometric properties of the underlying model, in particular, on its automorphism group. Assigning weights to different complex directions of the ambient space has been the main algebraic tool in studying the model manifolds. The new approach pursued in the paper under review uses different weights for different directions within the complex \textit{tangent} space of the submanifold. This makes the method suitable for the study of Levi degenerate models of finite Bloom-Graham type.
