In this paper, the authors study the following abstract Cauchy problem with Hilfer fractional derivative in an arbitrary Banach space \(X\) \[ \begin{cases} \mathcal{D}^{\lambda,\nu}u(t)+\mathcal{A}u(t)=g(t,u(t)), ~~ t\in (0,T],\\ \mathcal{I}^{(1-\lambda)(1-\nu)}u(0)=u_0, \end{cases} \] where \(\mathcal{D}^{\lambda,\nu}\) is the Hilfer fractional derivative of order \(\lambda\in (0, 1)\) and type \(\nu\in [0, 1],\) \(\mathcal{A}\) is an almost sectorial operator in \(X\) and \(g : [0,T] \times X \to X\) is a given function. Both cases when the associated semigroup is compact or noncompact are considered. In the compact case, an existence result for a mild solution is established via Schauder's fixed point theorem. In the noncompact case an existence result for a mild solution is established by using Schauder's fixed point theorem together with the technique of the Kuratowski measure of noncompactness and an existence and uniqueness result for a mild solution by applying Banach contraction mapping principle. An example illustrating the obtained results is also presented.
