In this paper, the authors introduce the concept of signed enhanced Dynkin diagrams. These objects are the usual enhanced Dynkin diagrams in which is indicated not just adjacency, but also the signs of inner products. Two vertices with inner product \(-1\) are joined by a solid line, whereas two vertices with inner product \(+1\) are joined by a dotted line. The purpose of this paper is to construct signed enhanced Dynkin diagrams of exceptional type \(\Phi \in \{ E_6, E_7, E_8\}\). The authors observe that these diagrams contain as subdiagrams all Carter-Stekolshchik diagrams [\textit{R. W. Carter}, Compos. Math. 25, 1--59 (1972; Zbl 0254.17005)] of conjugacy classes of the Weyl groups \(W(\Phi)\). The authors optimistically assert that the diagrams they introduced ``provides an extremely powerful mnemonic tool to easily reconstruct both the complete lists of root subsystems and the complete lists of conjugacy classes of \(W(E_6)\), \(W(E_7)\), and \(W(E_8)\) within quarter of an hour on a scrap of paper''.
