Let \(G\) be a finite group, and \(\mathcal{G}\) be a skeletal class of groups. A chief factor \(H/K\) of a group \(G\) is called \textit{\(\mathcal{G}\)-crucial} if \(G/H \in G\) and \(G/K\notin G\). A maximal subgroup \(M\) of a group \(G\) is called \textit{\(\mathcal{G}\)-crucial} if it complements some \(\mathcal{G}\)-crucial chief factor of a group \(G\). Let \(F(G)\) stands for the Fitting subgroup of a group \(G\). In [Arch. Math. 22, 577--589 (1971; Zbl 0252.20014)], \textit{T. Hawkes} proved that if \(G\) is a skeletal class of groups, \(G\) is a group and \(M\) is a \(\mathcal{G}\)-crucial maximal subgroup of \(G\), then \(F(G)\cap M = F(M)\) and \(O_\pi(G)\cap M = O_\pi(M)\) for any set of primes \(\pi\). In the paper under review, the author proves a more general result, namely he proves that all hereditary Fitting classes \(\mathcal{F}\) of soluble groups such that for every soluble finite group the intersection of the \(\mathcal{F}\)-radical with an \(\mathcal{S}\)-crucial maximal subgroup is equal to its \(\mathcal{F}\)-radical, where \(\mathcal{S}\) is the least by inclusion skeletal class of soluble groups, are exactly classes of all \(\sigma\)-nilpotent soluble finite groups.
