The authors consider finite thick generalized quadrangles \(S\) with an automorphism group \(G\) acting primitively on both points and lines of \(S\). The main result says: if \(G\) is almost simple with socle \(\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)\) where \(q\ge 4\), then \(q=9\) and \(S\) is the (symplectic) quadrangle of order \(2\).
