The paper under review proves a collection of results regarding a number of quantities involved in Diophantine approximation on algebraic varieties, including Chow weights, the approximation constant \(\alpha\), and the quantity \(\beta\) defined as follows: \[\beta_Z(L)=\int_0^\infty\frac{\mbox{Vol}(\pi^*L-tE)}{\mbox{Vol}(L)}dt \] where \(Z\) is a subvariety of \(X\), \(L\) a line bundle on \(X\), \(\pi\colon\tilde{X}\to X\) the blowup of \(X\) along \(Z\), and \(E\) the exceptional divisor of \(\pi\). The results proven are manifold and technical, but a sample result is the following (Theorem 1.1): Let \(L\) be a very ample line bundle, on a normal projective variety \(X\), and let \(Z\subsetneq X\) be a proper subscheme. Then \[\beta_Z(L)=\frac{e_X(\mathbf{c})}{(\dim X+1)(\deg_L X)} \] where \(e_X(\mathbf{c})\) is the Chow weight of \(X\) with respect to a linearly normal embedding induced by a basis of \(H^0(L)\) compatible with the filtration by order of vanishing along \(E\).
