The authors present an improved finite volume method preserving the discrete maximum principle for the diffusion problem with heterogeneous coefficient. This scheme can deal with various cases, including that arbitrary cell edges are the discontinuous line, and then overcomes the defect of the existing schemes which assume that there has only one discontinuous line in the computational cell. A theoretical analysis including the coercivity property and a prior estimation are provided. Numerical results show that the accuracy of this new method is superior to the existing scheme preserving maximum principle, even the accuracy increases up to one order of magnitudes in some examples. In addition, these numerical tests show that this new scheme satisfies the discrete maximum principle. The Picard iteration and the Newton method can be used to solve the nonlinear problem.
