The prominent algebraist László Fuchs posed the important question \textit{of which abelian groups arise as the group of units in an associative ring}? In the paper under review, the authors investigate a slightly related (and rather more approachable) question: \textit{for such realizable groups \(G\), when is there a ring \(R\) (possibly associative) with unit group \(G\) such that every group endomorphism of \(G\) is induced by a ring endomorphism of \(R\)}? They answer this question for four common classes of commutative groups: torsion-free abelian groups, abelian groups of odd order, torsion abelian groups and finitely generated abelian groups (see the substantial Theorem 1.1 which summarizes all main results in the article under review). The paper is very well written and contains too many interesting examples which clarify some more complicated situations. At some places in the text are used group rings, which makes the work quite intriguing.
