If \(f\) and \(g\) are topologically conjugate circle homeomorphisms, each with a singularity of the same type, and \(f\) and \(g\) are sufficiently smooth away from their singularities, then the conjugacy which maps the singular point to the singular point is \(C^1\) smooth. Under some additional conditions on the rotation numbers it was shown that the conjugacy is \(C^{1+\epsilon}\) smooth for some \(\epsilon > 0\) by \textit{E. de Faria} and \textit{W. de Melo} [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 1, No. 4, 339--392 (1999; Zbl 0988.37047); J. Am. Math. Soc. 13, No. 2, 343--370 (2000; Zbl 0988.37048)]. The paper here shows that when the singularities are breaks, for any break size \(c \ne 1\) there exists a positive constant \(v(c) < 1\) such that for any irrational rotation number \(\rho\) there exist analytic maps \(f\) and \(g\) with break size \(c\) and rotation number \(\rho\) such that \(f\) and \(g\) are not \(C^{2-v(c)}\) conjugate. In their main theorem the authors let \(f\) be a circle homeomorphism with a unique break point \(p\) of break size \(c\), irrational rotation number \(\rho\), and negative Schwarzian derivative away from \(p\) and they let \(g\) be the unique linear fractional circle map with unique break point \(p\) of break size \(c\) and rotation number \(\rho\).
