In the paper under review, the author studies rational irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups in which some non-central semisimple element has at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity greater than 1. The main result is Theorem 1.1: Let \(G\) be a simple algebraic group of rank \(n\) and \(V\) an irreducible \(G\)-module. Let \(s \in G\) be a regular semisimple element and let \(m_{s}(V)\) be the maximum of the eigenvalue multiplicities of \(s\) on \(V\). Suppose that at most one eigenvalue multiplicity of \(s\) on \(V\) exceeds 1. Then \(m_{s}(V) \leq n+1\). More precise details on the consequences of the hypotheses of Theorem 1.1 are provided in Theorem 1.2. Another result is a special case of the main theorem of [\textit{R. Guralnick} et al., Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 78, No. 1, 167--214 (1999; Zbl 1041.20035)] (Theorem 1.5): Let \(G\) be a quasi-simple group of Lie type in defining characteristic \(p > 0\) and \(q\) a \(p\)-power. Let \(s \in G\) be a non-central semisimple element and let \(\rho : G \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_{n}(q)\), \(n > 9\), be an irreducible representation such that \(\rho(g)\) is similar to \(\mathrm{diag}(\mathrm{Id}_{m}, M)\) where \(M \in \mathrm{GL}_{n-m}(q)\) is irreducible. Suppose that \(m < n/2\). Then \(G\) is classical and \(\rho\) is nearly natural.
