The paper concerns the topological structure of an isolated invariant set of a discrete dynamical system given by iterates of a homeomorphism. The main result s the following: Theorem. Suppose that \(f\) is a homeomorphism of a manifold, \(K\) is an isolated invariant set for \(f\) with finitely generated Čech homology groups that is not an attractor. Then, the number of essential quasicomponents of the unstable set of \(K\) is equal to \(\dim\check{H}_1(W_\infty, K) + 1\). Here the set \((W_\infty, K)\) is the Aleksandroff compactification of the unstable set \(W^u(K,f)\) of \(K\). A similar theorem in cohomological terms has been proved by the authors in [Math. Z. 294, No. 3--4, 1127--1180 (2020; Zbl 1441.37018)]. The proof presented here relies on an explicit pairing between Čech homology classes and Alexander-Spanier cohomology classes that takes the form of an integral, see authors' preprint [``Integration in Čech theories and a bound on entropy'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2112.14181}].
