Fix integers \(d\ge r\ge 3\). Halphen (\(r=3\)) and Castelnuovo gave a sharp upper bound for the genus of of a non-degenerate complex curve \(C\subset \mathbb{P}^r\) of degree \(d\) and proved that equality holds if and only if the curve is contained in a minimal degree, \(r-1\), surfaces. If \(d\) is not small with respect to For \(r=3\) Halphen (with complete proofs and extensions by L. Gruson and Ch. Peskine) gave an upper bound for the genus of a space curve not contained in a surface of degree \(i\). This paper (which is a continuation of [\textit{V. Di Gennaro}, Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2) 72, No. 3, 2181--2197 (2023; Zbl 1516.14099)]) study the problem for \(r\ge 4\). The introduction also gives informations and references for roughly similar (but wide open) problems. Fix integer \(r\ge 4\) and \(i\ge 2\); if \(r=4\) assume \(i\ge 3\). Assume that \(s\in \mathbb{Q}\) defined by the formula \[ \binom{i+1}{2}s +i+1 = \binom{r+i}{i} \] is an integer. Set \(m:= \lfloor (d-1)/s\rfloor\), \(\epsilon =d-1-ms\) and \(G(r,d,i):= \binom{m}{2}s+m\epsilon\). In these two paper the author proves that \(G(r;d,i)\) is an upper bound for the genus of a degree \(d\) curve in \(\mathbb{P}^r\) not contained in a hypersurface. Moreover, in this paper he gives informations on extremal cases.
