This paper investigates the size-dependent vibration and buckling behavior of nanoplates described by the nonlocal Kirchhoff model analytically. Direct separation of variables method (DSVM) is employed in the current work to analyse the eigenvalue problems of nonlocal Kirchhoff plates and explore the closed-form eigen-solutions for rectangular nanoplates with any combination of simply supported and clamped boundaries. The authors claim that the present DSVM can give closed-form solutions for seven boundary combinations in a unified formulation. For seven boundary combinations of S and C, namely, SSSS, SSSC, SCSC, CSCS, SSCC, SCCC and CCCC, only the first four cases, in which at least one pair of parallel edges is simply supported, can be treated by the classical inverse method (or Levy method). For the three Levy-type boundary conditions involving F, namely, SSSF, SCSF and SFSF, the DSVM is equivalent to the classical inverse method. To verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the newly formulated DSVM, comprehensive numerical comparisons have been performed. Besides, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of nonlocal parameters and boundary conditions on the size dependence of the natural frequency and critical buckling load of nanoplates. The eigen-buckling analysis of rectangular nanoplates under uniaxial and biaxial loadings is also performed in this paper. Extensive numerical results are presented both in tabular and graphical form.
