Let \(V\) be an Abelian group and \(\varphi\in\Aut(V)\). The automorphism \(\varphi\) is said to be a quadratic automorphism if there exist \(m,n\in\mathbb{Z}\) such that \(\varphi^2(v)=m\varphi(v)+nv\) for every \(v \in V\); \(\varphi\) is said to be virtually quadratic if \(\varphi\) induces a quadratic automorphism on \(V/W\) where \(W\) is some finitely generated \(\varphi\)-invariant subgroup of \(V\). \textit{A. Kh. Zhurtov} [in Algebra Logika 39, No. 3, 320-328 (2000); translation in Algebra Logic 39, No. 3, 184-188 (2000; Zbl 0980.20049)] proved that a periodic group generated by a pair of quadratic automorphisms is finite; in the paper under review the authors generalize this result to virtually quadratic automorphisms (Theorem 1). In addition the following refinement of a result by \textit{E. N. Makarenko} [Vestn. Novosib. Gos. Univ., Ser. Mat. Mekh. Inform. 3, No. 1, 55-60 (2003; Zbl 1079.20073)] is given (Theorem 2): Let \(G\) be a periodic group generated by a pair of quadratic automorphisms of an Abelian group. Then \(G\) is isomorphic to an extension of a finite nilpotent group by a subgroup of the direct product \(\prod_{i=1}^s\text{GL}(2,p_i^{m_i})\) (\(p_i\) prime numbers and \(m_i\in\mathbb{N}\) for every \(i=1,2,\dots,s\)).
