The authors prove the following purely group-theoretic result using representation-theoretic arguments: if \(G\) is a finite group and \(P\) is a Sylow \(2\)-subgroup of \(G\), then the number of conjugacy classes of \(G\) consisting of elements of odd order is greater or equal to the number of conjugacy classes of the normaliser \(N_G(P)\) in \(G\) of \(P\) consisting of elements of odd order. This result may be seen as a consequence of Alperin's weight conjecture, specified at the prime number \(2\). The proof proceeds through a reduction to simple groups, in such way that the authors are reduced to verify a condition, called the \textit{inductive Sylow-AWC condition}, for all finite non-abelian simple groups.
