In the paper under review, the author explains some classical and recent improvements in the analytic theory of prime numbers. The classical part starts with Euclid's proof of infinitude of primes, and consists mentioning the works of Hadamard and de la Valleé Poussin on the prime number theorem. The author gives a concise information about the Riemann zeta function, \(\zeta(s)\), and its zeros, and then describes the relation between primes and \(\zeta(s)\). Her brief explanation of Dirichlet \(L\)-functions ends in mentioning exceptional character and Siegel zero, which is required in explaining part of recent results by the author and some of her colleagues in the theory of primes and almost primes in short intervals. In the last section, the author explains strategy of the proofs. I recommend the interested reader to see also [\textit{K. Matomäki}, Eur. Math. Soc. Newsl. 118, 39--44 (2020; Zbl 1482.11130)], another paper by the author in the same nature, explaining recently developed methods of studying and understanding the behaviour of multiplicative functions in short intervals. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1519.00033].
