Let \(G\) be a Coxeter group. If \(G\) is of classical type \(\mathsf{A}_{n}\), \(\mathsf{B}_{n}\) or \(\mathsf{D}_{n}\), then \(G\) contains a chain of subgroups of the same type. In the paper under review, the authors prove that intersections of conjugates of these subgroups are again of the same type and make precise in which sense and to what extent this property is exclusive to the classical types of Coxeter groups. As the main tool in the proof they use \textit{L, Solomon}'s descent algebra [J. Algebra 41, 255--268 (1976; Zbl 0355.20007)]. Using Stirling numbers, they express certain basis elements of the descent algebra as polynomials and derive explicit multiplication formulas for a commutative subalgebra of the descent algebra.
