Let \(G(k)\) denote the least number \(s\) having the property that every sufficiently large natural number is the sum of at most \(s\) positive integral \(k\)-th powers. In this paper, the authors prove that for all \(k\in\mathbb{N}\), one has \(G(k)\leq \lceil k\left(\log k + 4.20032\right)\rceil\) and \(G(k)< k\left(\log k + C_1\right)+C_2\), where \(C_1\approxeq 4.200189\) and \(C_2\approxeq 3.015478\) are constants determined explicitly in terms of the unique solution of the transcendental equation \(w-2-1/w=\log w\). For \(14\leq k\leq 20\), they show that \(G(k)\leq H(k)\), where \(H(k)=89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129, 137\), respectively for \(k=14, \dots, 20\).
