The authors aim to extend some compactifications of spaces of maps from non-singular curves to smooth projective toric varieties to the case when the curve is not fixed in the moduli, and also in the presence of marking. That is, the authors produce a \textit{relative} compactification over the moduli space \(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,k}\) of stable curves. The construction has a perfect obstruction theory(virtually smooth). These virtually smooth compactifications generalize Givental's compactifications, when the complex structure of the curve is allowed to vary and marking are included, and are the toric counterpart of the moduli spaces of stable quotients introduced by Marian, Oprea and Pandharipande to compactify spaces of maps to Grassmannians. The authors also include a discussion on the resulting invariants and their (conjectural) relation to Gromov-Witten theory.
