The first volume of the book is the revised edition of the authors' book ``Relative homological algebra'' published in 2000 (see also Zbl 0952.13001 for details of its contents). The reviewer of Zbl 0952.13001 wrote: ``The subject of relative homological algebra was introduced by \textit{S. Eilenberg} and \textit{J. C. Moore} in their memoir [Foundation of relative homological algebra. Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 55 (1965; Zbl 0129.01101)]. The basic objects of this framework were precovers, covers, preenvelopes and envelopes of modules, and those were used to construct various kinds of resolutions and their resulting derived functors in module theory. After the appearance of the pioneering work of Eilenberg and Moore, thirty-five years ago, much progress has been made in this field, and the authors of the book under review have contributed a great deal to the development in homological algebra. Now they present another systematic treatment of this subject, including the various new developments and applications.'' The first volume of the present, second edition, covers the contents of the previous first edition completely. It is changed by a few minor subjects: (1) Section 1.2 is rewritten in order to make some basic notions more accessible for beginners. (2) Macaulay's inverse polynomials as a description of injective envelopes in polynomial rings is included in Section 3. (3) In Chapter 11.9, the investigation of Kaplansky classes is included. This is a subject that was not available at the time of the first edition. (4) The bibliography is updated by adding new references. Thus the material of the first volume might be used as a basis for the study of relative homological algebra. Moreover in the reviewer's opinion it is an elegant introduction to homological methods towards applications in ring theory. For more details see also [Zbl 0952.13001].
