The authors present a model for the hippocampal-entorhinal interplay characterized by a joint attractor dynamic of place and grid cells related to the effect of remapping. In the model, place cells depend on the current grid cell activity but can reset grid cell activity for the remapping process that is activated by the passing through a gateway. As a consequence, a previously stored pattern is reactivated from the gateway database and the joint attractor will restore the grid cell pattern that was active when the gateway had first been learned so that the path integration can proceed from there. The model has been tested on previously reported mazes and used for making forecasts for remapping of new maze type. Involvement of memory as ``gate cells'' driving the place cells together with the joint hippocampal-entorhinal loop into the matching attractor whenever a compartment is entered is proposed.
