The authors describe a procedure of dilating an operator \(T\) in an infinite-dimensional Krein space \(\mathcal{K}\), such that many of the spectral and algebraic properties of the operators \(T^{[*]}T\) and \(TT^{[*]}\) are preserved. For example, it is shown that definitizability and nilpotency are preserved. Moreover, the authors describe the behavior of Jordan chains corresponding to the zero eigenvalue of \(T^{[*]}T\) under the \(J\)-dilation. The latter is exploited for the study of canonical forms of \(T^{[*]}T\) and \(TT^{[*]}\) in a finite-dimensional Krein space \(\mathcal{K}\). Namely, using the \(J\)-dilation procedure, the authors obtain new proofs of Theorem 3.2 from [\textit{C. Mehl}, \textit{V. Mehrmann} and \textit{H.-G. Xu}, Oper. Matrices 3, No.~3, 303--356 (2009; Zbl 1188.15012)] on canonical forms and of Corollary 6 from [\textit{C. Mehl}, \textit{A. C. M. Ran} and \textit{L. Rodman}, Oper. Theory Adv. Appl. 162, 277--292 (2006; Zbl 1108.47034)] on a polar decomposition.
