Consider the system \(\Delta u=|x|^a u^p\) in \(\Omega\), \(\Delta v=|x|^b v^q f(|\nabla u|)\) in \(\Omega\), where \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N\), \(N\geq 2\) is either a ball or the whole space. It is assumed that \(a,b,p,q>0\), \(f\in C^1[0, \infty)\) and \(f(t)>0\) for all \(t>0\). First, the authors characterize the existence of positive radial solutions in case \(\Omega=\mathbb B_r\subset \mathbb{R}^N\). It is abtained that the system has positive solutions \((u,v)\) with \(u\) or \(v\) (or both) blow up at the boudary of \(\Omega\) if and only if \(\int_1^\infty (\int_0^s F(t) dt)^{-p/(2p-q+1)} dy<\infty\), where \(F(t)=\int_0^t f(s)ds\). Next, the authors discuss the existence and the asymptotic behaviour of solutions when \(\Omega=\mathbb{R}^N\) and \(f(t)=t^s\), \(s\geq 1\). In this case it is shown that the system has a positive global solution if and only if \(ps+q-1\leq 0\). The approach relies on dynamical systems arguments combined with ODE techniques.
