For a group \(G\) with a free presentation \(G\simeq F/R\), the \(c\)-nilpotent multiplier \(\mathcal{M}^{(c)}(G)\) of \(G\) is defined as \(\big (R \cap \gamma_{c+1}(F) \big) \big/[R, \,_{c}F]\) where \(\gamma_{c}(F)\) is the \(c\)-th term of the lower central series of \(F\) and \([R, \,_{c}F]=[[R,\, _{c-1}F],F]\). If \(G\) is a \(p\)-group of order \(p^{n}\) then \(\big | \mathcal{M}^{(2)}(G) \big |=p^{\mu}\) where \(\mu=\frac{1}{2}n(n-1)(n-2)+3-s_{2}(G)\), for an integer \(s_{2}(G)\) (see [the authors, Glasg. Math. J. 57, No. 1, 201--210 (2015; Zbl 1311.20010)]). In the paper under review, the authors characterize all non-abelian \(p\)-groups \(G\) satisfying \(s_{2}(G) \in \{1,2,3\}\).
