In this paper, the authors establish and study a model for foot-and-mouth disease, considering two important factors in transmission, namely age-structure and spatial heterogeneity. First, the well-posedness of the solution to the system with nonlocal diffusion is studied using the Hille-Yosida theorem, then, a generalized approach, a renewal process is provided which allows the computation of the next generation operator. The basic reproduction number, which serves as a threshold parameter for the global dynamics, is then obtained as the spectral radius of this operator. A complete proof of the existence of a nontrivial steady state is given by using the Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem and the global stability of the virus-free steady state is shown by using the comparison principle. The effect of small diffusion on foot-and-mouth disease transmission in a completely isolated circumstance is also studied. Numerical simulations are shown to study the effects of nonlocal diffusions on disease spread.
