In this paper, the authors study a two-species competition model in a periodic discrete habitat, i.e., a two-dimensional lattice reaction-diffusion system with periodic coefficients. The paper can be seen as a generalization of a famous 2008 paper [\textit{X. Chen} et al., Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 189, No. 2, 189--236 (2008; Zbl 1152.37033)] to two-species case. As in this paper, nonlocal diffusion is considered and reaction functions correspond to competition interaction case, i.e.: \begin{align*} f_{1,j}(u,v) &= u (b_{1,j}-u-\gamma_{1,j} v) \\ f_{2,j}(u,v) &= u (b_{2,j}-u-\gamma_{2,j} v) \end{align*} Both reaction coefficients \(b_{i,j},\gamma_{i,j}\), and diffusion coefficients \(d_{i,j}\) are (spatially) \(N\)-periodic functions. The authors consider the parametric configuration in which there are two semi-trivial equilibria \(E_1=(\tilde{w}_1,0)\) and \(E_2=(0,\tilde{w}_2)\) and show that \(E_1\) is globally asymptotically stable and \(E_2\) is unstable. Consequently, they study traveling waves which connect \(E_1\) and \(E_2\) and their spreading speeds.\par Finally, the results are nicely illustrated on the special case with the standard local diffusion (described by the central difference \(L u_j = u_{j-1}-2u_j+u_{j+1}\)): \[ \left\{\begin{array}{l}u_{1, j}^{\prime}=d_1 L u_{1, j}+u_{1, j}\left(a_j-u_{1, j}-c u_{2, j}\right), \\ u_{2, j}^{\prime}=d_2 L u_{2, j}+u_{2, j}\left(a_j-u_{2, j}-u_{1, j}\right),\end{array}\right. \] In this special case, the general results are valid once the average of \(a_j\) is nonnegative, i.e.: \[ \sum_{j=1}^{N} a_j \geq 0. \]
