This note deals with the question of the conditions ensuring the absolute convergence of double Fourier series. The space of the functions with absolutely convergent Fourier series is denoted by \(A\). The main result of the paper is Theorem 1. There is a continuously differentiable function of two variables, with modulus of continuity \(\omega\), not in \(A\) for every \(\eta\), \(0<\eta<1/2\), and for the modulus of continuity \(\omega(t)=[\log(10/t)]^{-1/2+\eta}\). This result is proved using simple probabilistic considerations.
