In this interesting paper, the authors develop a general framework for obtaining Fredholm determinant formulae, with explicit kernels, for the finite dimensional distributions of several models of interacting particle systems, starting from any initial condition. This generalises the authors' previous work (with \textit{J. Quastel} [Ann. Probab. 48, No. 5, 2344--2358 (2020; Zbl 1456.60263)]) where such an explicit formula was obtained for TASEP. In that work asymptotic analysis of the formula for TASEP was used to construct the KPZ fixed point, a universal object in the KPZ universality class. The formulae obtained for the broad class of models in the paper under review have a similar structure to the one for TASEP. Their asymptotic study is an interesting problem which is still open at the time of writing of this review.
