    In the present paper, the authors study the following Nakao-type weakly coupled system with nonlinearities of derivative type: \begin{eqnarray*} && u_{tt} \Delta u + bu_t+m^2 u=|v_t|^p, \,\,\,v_{tt} -\Delta v=|u_t|^q,\,\,\,(t,x)\in (0,T)\times \mathbb{R}^n,\\ && (u,u_t)(0,x)=\varepsilon(u_0,u_1)(x), \,\,\,(v,v_t)(0,x)=\varepsilon(v_0,v_1)(x),\,\,\,x \in \mathbb{R}^n, \end{eqnarray*} where \(p,q>1\), \(b>0\), \(m^2 \geq 0\) are constants, and \(\varepsilon>0\) is a parameter describing the size of the Cauchy data. The main goal of the paper is to prove a blow-up result for local (in time) classical solutions and to provide an upper bound estimate for the lifespan \(T(\varepsilon)\). These results are proved under the following assumptions: \begin{itemize} \item[1.] The data \(u_0,v_0\) are supposed to be nonnegative and compactly supported and belong to \(C_0^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\). \item[2.] The data \(u_1,v_1\) are supposed to be nonnegative and compactly supported and belong to \(C_0^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\). The data \(v_1\) is nontrivial. \item[3.] It holds \(b^2 \geq 4m^2\), that is, the classical damped Klein-Gordon equation of the above model is a model with dominant dissipation or a balanced model between mass and damping term. \item[4.] For the space dimension \(n\) and powers \(p\) and \(q\) it holds \[ \frac{1}{pq-1}-\frac{n-1}{2} \geq 0. \] \end{itemize} The method of proof uses a technique of Zhou basing on a reduction of the above model to the 1d case by integrating with respect to the last \(n-1\) space variables and proving blow-up on a suitable characteristic line. Moreover, the authors use an iteration argument (slicing procedure) to derive a sequence of lower bound estimates for suitable time-dependent functionals. Some integral representation formula for linear classical damped Klein-Gordon models in 1d are used. It would be nice to answer the following challenging questions in the future. \begin{itemize} \item What about lower bound estimates for the lifespan? \item Are there some blow-up results for the above model in the mass dominant case \(b^2 < 4m^2\)? \item Do we have global (in time) well-posedness results for the above model for \(b^2 \geq 4m^2\) and \[ \frac{1}{pq-1}-\frac{n-1}{2} < 0? \] \end{itemize}
