The paper studies boundaries in the setting of metric (measure) spaces satisfying lower sectional/Ricci curvature bounds, namely Alexandrov/RCD spaces, respectively. The first main result states the following: Let \((X,\mathsf{d}_X)\) be an Alexandrov space of dimension \(N\in\mathbb N\). Let \(\Omega\subseteq X\) be a regular open set whose closure \((\bar\Omega,\mathsf{d}_\Omega)\) is an Alexandrov space (where \(\mathsf{d}_\Omega\) denotes the intrinsic length distance) that does not intersect the Alexandrov boundary \(\mathcal F X\) of \(X\). Then the topological boundary of \(\bar\Omega\) coincides with the Alexandrov boundary \(\mathcal F\bar\Omega\). The second main result states a similar property for \(\mathrm{RCD}\) spaces: Let \((X,\mathsf{d}_X,\mathcal H_X^N)\) be an \(\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)\) space for some \(K\in\mathbb R\) and \(N\in\mathbb N\) (a so-called noncollapsed \(\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)\) space). Let \(\Omega\subseteq X\) be a regular open set whose closure \((\bar\Omega,\mathsf{d}_\Omega,\mathcal H_{\bar\Omega}^N)\) is an \(\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)\) space that does not intersect the De Philippis-Gigli boundary \(\partial X\) of \(X\). Assume further that \(\mathsf{d}_\Omega\) satisfies a suitable local Lipschitz condition at the topological boundary of \(\bar\Omega\). Then the topological boundary of \(\bar\Omega\) coincides with the De Philippis-Gigli boundary \(\partial\bar\Omega\).
