    Let \(k\) be either a number field or \(\mathbb{C}\) and let \(X\) be a complete variety over \(k\). In [\textit{M. Ru} and \textit{J. T. Y. Wang}, Int. J. Number Theory 18, No. 1, 61--74 (2022; Zbl 1483.14043)], the following invariant is defined. Let \(\mathscr{L}\) be a big line bundle over \(X\). Let \(Y\) be a nonempty proper closed subscheme of \(X\), and let \(\mathscr{I}\) be the sheaf of ideals corresponding to \(Y\). Then \[ \beta(\mathscr{L},Y):=\liminf_{N \to \infty} \frac{\sum_{m=1}^\infty h^0(X,\mathscr{L}^{\otimes N} \otimes \mathscr{I}^{\otimes m})}{N h^0(X,\mathscr{L}^{\otimes N})}. \] One defines Weil functions relative to proper closed subschemes \(Y\) on \(X\) by blowing up \(X\) along \(Y\) to obtain a Cartier divisor on the blow-up. In this paper, the authors show the following result on diophantine approximation to certain closed subschemes generalizing a result of \textit{M. Ru} and \textit{J. T. Y. Wang} [Int. J. Number Theory 18, No. 1, 61--74 (2022; Zbl 1483.14043)]. Let \(\mathscr{L}\) be a big line bundle over \(X\). Let \(p \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}\). For an integer \(1 \leq i \leq p\), let \(Y_{i,1}, \ldots, Y_{i,q_i}\) be proper closed subschemes of \(X\) which `weakly intersect properly'. Assume that \(k\) is a number field. Let \(S\) be a finite set of places of \(k\). Let \(\lambda_{Y_{i,j},v}\) denote the Weil function for \(Y_{i,j}\) at \(v\) for any \(i,j\) and \(v \in S\). Then for any \(\varepsilon>0\) and \(C \in \mathbb{R}\), there exists a proper Zariski closed subset \(Z \subset X\) satisfying the inequality \[ [k:\mathbb{Q}]^{-1} \sum_{v \in S} \max_i \sum_j \beta(Y_{i,j},\mathscr{L}) \lambda_{Y_{i,j},v}(x) \leq (1+\varepsilon) h_{\mathscr{L}}(x)+C \] for all points \(x \in X(k) \setminus Z\). If \(k=\mathbb{C}\), an analogous analytic inequality is also shown.
