Suppose that a finite group \(G\) contains a normal subgroup \(N\) and a conjugacy class \(K\) such that \(K\cup K^{-1}\) is a union of cosets of \(N\). The author proves that under this assumption \(N\) is soluble. Moreover every irreducible character of \(G\) takes real or purely imaginary values on \(K\), and if in addition the elements of \(K\) are \(p\)-elements for some prime \(p\) then \(N\) has normal \(p\)-complement. The normal subgroup \(\langle K \rangle\) need not be soluble. However this is true if \(K\cup K^{-1}\) is a single coset of \(N.\) Indeed the author proves that if \(K=x^G\) and \(xN=K\cup K^{-1}\), then \(\langle K \rangle\) has a normal 2-complement and \(x\) is a 2-element. Furthermore, if \(|x|=2\), then the normal 2-complement of \(K\) is nilpotent.
