The authors study the Cauchy problem for the fractional differential equation \[ D^{\alpha}u(t)=Au(t)+B(t)u(t),\;\;t>0;\quad \lim_{t\to 0}D^{\alpha -1}u(t)=u_0, \] the derivative \(D^{\alpha}\) is understood in the sense of Riemann-Liouville, \(0<\alpha<1\), \(A\) is a closed linear operator densely defined and \(B(t)\) is a (generally unbounded) linear operator densely defined in a Banach space \(X\). Under appropriate conditions on \(A\) and \(B(t)\), they prove that this problem is uniquely solvable and depends continuously on the initial data. These results complement some well-known results by T. Kato and recent ones by the second author
