The author discusses anomalous negative thermal expansion by inspiration from the tangram puzzle. The in-plane Poisson's ratio for infinitesimal deformation is derived using the engineering strain definition, and by plane geometrical considerations. The results reveal the high macroscopic anisotropy of the considered structure. The author asserts that the combined characteristics of this tangram-inspired metamaterial permits it to function in ways that can neither be attained by conventional materials, nor by existing metamaterials that possess only negative properties.
