    This note announces several interesting results about the finite strict singularity of the inclusion \(E \to F\), where \(E\) and \(F\) are rearrangement invariant (r.i.) Banach spaces consisting of measurable functions on \([0,1]\) that are separable or a dual of a separable space, and \(E\) embeds continuously into \(F\). Proofs will appear elsewhere. The inclusion \(E \to F\) is finitely strictly singular if \(\lim_n \gamma_n(E,F) = 0\), where \[ \gamma_n(E,F) = \sup_{Q \subset E, \dim(Q)=n} \inf_{x \in Q, \| x\|_{E} = 1} \| x\|_F \] is the Bernstein \(n\)-width of the inclusion for \(n \in \mathbb N\). Let \(\varphi_E(t) = \| \chi_{[0,t]}\|_E\) for \(0 \leq t \leq 1\). Main results: (i) \(\varphi_E(1/n) \leq \gamma_n(L_\infty,E) \leq \sqrt{\varphi_E(1/n)}\) for any r.i. space \(E\) and any \(n\). In particular, the inclusion \(L_\infty \to E\) is finitely strictly singular whenever \(E \neq L_\infty\). (ii) If \(E\) is a \(2\)-convex r.i. space, then \(\gamma_n(L_\infty,E) \asymp \varphi_E(1/n)\) uniformly. (iii) If \(1 < p < \infty\), \(p \neq 2\) and \(1 \leq q \leq \infty\), then \(\gamma_n(L_\infty,L_{p,q}) \asymp n^{-1/\max (p,2)}\) uniformly, where \(L_{p,q}\) is the Lorentz space. (iv) \(n^{-1/2} \leq \gamma_n(L_\infty,L_{2,q}) \leq (2 + \log n)^{1/q - 1/2}n^{-1/2}\) for \(1 \leq q < 2\), and \(\gamma_n(L_\infty,L_{2,q}) = n^{-1/2}\) for \(2 \leq q \leq \infty\). (v) The embedding \(\Lambda (\phi) \subset M(\phi)\) is not finitely strictly singular, where \(\Lambda (\phi)\) and \(M(\phi)\) are the Lorentz and Marcinkiewicz spaces associated to the increasing concave function \(\phi: [0,1] \to [0,1]\). In particular, there are strictly singular embeddings \(\Lambda (\phi) \to M(\phi)\) which fail to be finitely strictly singular.
